Indian ODI team vice-captain Shreyas Iyer suffered an injury during the tour of Australia. The injury was quite serious, and he had to be admitted to the ICU. Since then, everyone has been wondering when Iyer will return to the team. A major update has emerged regarding his injury and comeback. The ODI series against New Zealand is scheduled to be announced in a few days, and Iyer's fitness is a hot topic of discussion ahead of the announcement.

According to an India Today report, Iyer will now undergo a test where match-like situations will be created for him. Only after this test will a decision be made regarding his participation in the series against New Zealand.

Iyer shows improvement

Iyer is currently at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. He has been in the final phase of his recovery since December 25, 2025. During this time, he has shown significant improvement in his strength and conditioning. He has participated in high-intensity batting and fielding sessions and performed well. Iyer has been scheduled for two match simulations, the first on January 2 (today) and the second on January 5. He will only be given the green light to return if he plays in both sessions without any problems.

Confusion remains

According to media reports, the BCCI might announce the team for the ODI series against New Zealand on January 3.  It is unclear whether Iyer will make it into the team, as his second simulation session is on January 5. This is causing confusion. Time might be a factor in his return.

Due to this injury, Iyer was unable to play in the ODI series against South Africa. He sustained the injury during the last ODI match of the Australia tour. In the third match, he fell while taking a catch of Alex Carey, resulting in internal bleeding in his ribs, which significantly worsened his condition.
