Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has made important remarks on the lynching of a Hindu youth in Bangladesh and the ongoing political and social unrest there. He clearly stated that India cannot directly intervene in Bangladesh's internal affairs, but it can certainly use its diplomatic influence to encourage the government there to take constructive steps.
The incident involved the brutal killing of 25-year-old Hindu youth Deepu Chandra Das by a mob in Mymensingh, Bangladesh, on charges of alleged blasphemy. This incident has drawn strong reactions in India and elsewhere.
‘India has contributed, therefore it has the right to advise.’
In an interview with a newspaper, Shashi Tharoor said that India has played a historic role in the creation and development of Bangladesh. Therefore, New Delhi has the right to engage with the Dhaka government and urge it to take concrete steps to stop violence against minorities. He said that India cannot interfere in the domestic affairs of a neighboring country, but it can certainly use its diplomatic relations to encourage the Bangladeshi government to take steps in a positive direction.
Appreciation for the Modi government's stance
Shashi Tharoor praised the Modi government's balanced approach towards Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina's removal from power in August. He also said that India should support the forces working to establish an inclusive democracy in Bangladesh. He mentioned that the Parliament's Standing Committee on External Affairs recently prepared a report on this issue, which praised the government's approach while emphasizing support for democratic values.
Bangladesh is boiling with violence.
The killing of Deepu Chandra Das comes at a time when Bangladesh is already going through a period of unrest. Protests and violence erupted in Dhaka and other areas after the death of student leader Sharif Usman Hadi. Hadi was fatally attacked on December 12 and died while undergoing treatment in Singapore. These incidents have not only made the situation tense within Bangladesh but have also impacted India-Bangladesh relations.
