Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajeev Kumar and EC Anoop Chandra Pandey inaugurated a multi-media exhibition on the theme 'Voter Registration, First Step for Democracy' at Savitribai Phule Pune University on Wednesday. The exhibition will be on display for the next three days. The event was organized by the Central Bureau of Communications (CBC) and DEO Pune. Rajeev Kumar also launched the special summary revision of the voter list at the national level in Pune city of Maharashtra. He also flagged off a cycle rally to spread awareness about voter registration. On this occasion the Chief Election Commissioner of India, Rajiv Kumar said that there are about 2.49 lakh voters in the Indian electoral roll, whose age is more than 100 years. Besides, 1.80 crore voters are above 80 years of age, he said.
This initiative of the Election Commission of India (ECI) aims to increase the registration of voters in urban areas. Elaborating on the strength and beauty of the Indian electoral roll, Kumar said the country has voters from the highest peaks of the Himalayas, the coastal areas in the south, deserts in the west, and the northeastern regions. He said, "You will be happy to know that there are about 2.49 lakh voters in the voter list, who are above 100 years of age. When you interact with him, you will find that he has been voting all his life and what a relief and excitement it feels," he told reporters after the rally. Besides, 1.80 crore voters are above 80 years of age.
Kumar referred to India's first voter, Shyam Saran Negi, saying that he had voted through postal ballot three days before his death. "That's the spirit." He said, "Summary revision happens every year, but this year we are doing a very focused activity and starting it today across the country from Pune," the CEC said. , ''What does it mean? Everywhere in the country and the most remote states, be it hills, coastlines, inaccessible areas, or deserts, every single citizen can enlist as a voter and strengthen democracy not only by registering but also by his vote.
