The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has asked the Uttar Pradesh government to act expeditiously in the discharge of chromium-contaminated waste from tanneries in the Kanpur district without proper treatment. Along with this, the NGT has also directed the officials to file a compliance report.
A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said some progress has been made in the matter but the untreated effluents continue to flow into the Ganga through drains and a Common Waste Treatment Plant (CETP).
The bench said that due to a lack of adequate action by the state government officials, the problem persists. Due to this, there is a need to take remedial steps in mission mode. At the same time, the responsibility of the guilty officers should also be fixed for such frequent failures.
The bench had recently ordered that the UPPCB needs to take remedial measures to check pollution caused by tanneries. This includes the issuance of appropriate guidelines, sealing of drums or pedals, reduction in production capacity, and closure of tanneries till compliance targets are achieved.
