The high-level committee set up to probe the spyware Pegasus, which destroyed the entire monsoon session of Parliament last year, has submitted its report. The Supreme Court will hear the matter on Friday. During the nearly six-month probe, only 13 people recorded their statements before the committee. According to highly placed sources, the committee constituted under the chairmanship of former Supreme Court judge Justice RV Ravindran submitted its report in a sealed cover to the Supreme Court on Thursday.
During the investigation, technical checks of about 20 mobiles were conducted, out of which 10 mobile phones were taken directly from the custody of NIA. These mobile phones were confiscated by the NIA from the accused in the Urban Naxal case registered in the Bhima Koregaon case. There were allegations that the government illegally used Pegasus spyware to gather information about their activities.
Out of 13 people, about 10 people had submitted their mobile phones for investigation.
Apart from this, out of 13 people who recorded their statements before the committee, about 10 people had submitted their mobile phones to the committee for investigation. By the way, whether Pegasus has been found in the tested mobile or not, could not be confirmed. Considering the sensitivity of the matter and the strict monitoring of the Supreme Court, it is being kept strictly confidential.
Information was also sought about the guidelines
Last year, the opposition mainly blamed the central government for the use of Pegasus spyware. But the committee expanded the scope of the investigation to include state governments as well. According to sources, the committee has written to all the states asking them to inform whether Pegasus or any other spyware like it has been procured from them. If purchased that the information about the guidelines framed for its use was also sought.
It is believed that the report of the committee may also include the answers of the state governments. It is to be noted that the committee constituted under the chairmanship of Justice RV Ravindran has advisors to former IPS officer Alok Joshi and software and system engineering chairman Dr. Sandeep Oberoi. Apart from this, Dr. Naveen Kumar Choudhary, Dr. Prabharan P, and Dr. Ashwin Anil Gumaste are on the technical committee.
