The government is making constant efforts to encourage people to adopt electric vehicles. However, now the government is considering a new measure, a move that is expected to give further impetus to the efforts towards electric mobility. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has now proposed to exempt electric vehicles from the registration fee. That is, the ministry is considering waiving the registration fee for electric vehicles in India.
The new draft notification states that any electric vehicle (EV) buyer will be exempted from paying the registration fee for a new EV or the fee for renewal of registration. This may seem like an important measure until you realize that vehicle registration in India is not that expensive. As per Rule 81 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, the vehicle registration fee in India ranges from Rs.300 to Rs.1500 only. A more concrete step would be the subsidy in road tax which varies from state to state.
The ministry tweeted
The ministry shared this information on social media Twitter and wrote, "MoRTH has issued a draft notification exempting battery-operated vehicles from payment of a fee for issue or renewal of registration certificate and allotment of the new registration mark. It has been notified to encourage e-mobility."
This rule will apply to all battery-operated vehicles, be it two-wheelers, three-wheelers, or four-wheelers.
Discount in new scrappage policy
Earlier, MoRTH had proposed a 25 percent concession in road tax for private vehicles and 15 percent for transport vehicles on obtaining scrapping certificates. The new scrappage policy is expected to be implemented from October 1 this year.
According to the new proposal, non-transport vehicles will get up to 25 percent rebate in motor vehicle tax and transport vehicles up to 15 percent if the vehicle is registered for submission of "Certificate of Vehicle Scraping". A similar relaxation for EVs could help accelerate EV adoption in the Indian market.
