Former India cricketer and head coach Ravi Shastri has demanded a cut in the T20 bilateral series when cricket is battling with the problem of a busy schedule, saying that instead of it, franchise cricket can be promoted. According to the next Future Tour Program (FTP) of the International Cricket Council (ICC), T20 cricket is going to increase significantly and there will be a special window of two and a half months for the Indian Premier League (a separate time for organizing the tournament).
With the number of matches increasing, the burden on players playing in many formats is increasing. England's top all-rounder Ben Stokes surprised everyone by announcing his retirement from One Day International cricket on Monday. Stokes said that playing in all three formats is not right for him. Earlier this month Cricket South Africa decided to pull out of the One Day International series against Australia to ensure their players were available for the new domestic T20 tournament.
Shastri said on Telegraph's sports podcast, 'I am a little cautious about bilateral series, especially in T20 cricket. There is a lot of franchise cricket happening which can be promoted, be it in any country – India, West Indies, or Pakistan. He said, 'You can play less bilateral series and then play together in the World Cup. This will increase the importance of the ICC World Cup tournament. People will be curious to see them.
