Following recent political developments in Nepal—and the disputes and tightened customs regulations that emerged in border areas after the New Year (April 14)—efforts to find a resolution are now gaining momentum.
In light of the difficulties faced in procuring daily necessities from neighboring Indian markets, a dialogue process has been initiated at the local level.
On Monday, Vikram Khanal—Member of Parliament for Constituency No. 1 in West Nawalparasi District—met with SP Govind Khati, who is stationed at the district headquarters of the Armed Police Force (APF) Nepal, to draw attention to the grievances of ordinary citizens.
He highlighted that, over the past few days, Nepali citizens have been encountering significant difficulties in bringing daily necessities from nearby Indian markets.
The primary issue stems from the increased stringency of customs regulations. The imposition of duties on goods exceeding a value of 100 rupees (the "Nepal 100 Rupee Rule")—coupled with restrictions on certain items—has exacerbated the hardships faced by the public. Consequently, the daily lives of ordinary citizens residing in the border regions are being adversely affected.
Relief Expected Through MP's Initiative
MP Khanal emphasized the need to provide relief to the general public—while strictly adhering to the law—by fostering coordination with security agencies.
He urged APF officials to refrain from creating unnecessary obstacles for local citizens attempting to procure essential supplies, requesting that they exercise flexibility and facilitate the process while ensuring compliance with established regulations.
Following this initiative, there is optimism that residents of the border regions will soon experience some relief, and that the difficulties currently hindering the movement of daily necessities will be alleviated.
