Panaji, Jan 16 (IANS) More than a year after the collapse of an under-construction residential building which killed 31 people, most of them construction workers, Goa Police Friday arrested two promoters of the project from Maharashtra.

A police spokesperson said Pardip Singh Birring and Jagdeep Sehgal were arrested in Navi Mumbai following a tip-off that the promoters of the Ruby Residency complex were to visit the headquarters of a real estate company in Navi Mumbai.

In January last year, 31 people were killed after an under-construction wing of the Ruby Residency in Canacona, a sub-district located in South Goa, 90 km from Panaji collapsed.

The tragedy was the biggest ever reported in Goa as far as fatalities were concerned.

Both Birring as well as Sehgal were absconding since the tragedy, which had forced the Goa government to set up an enquiry headed by a retired bureaucrat to go into the reasons why the collapse happened.

The findings of the enquiry have not been made public yet. Several bureaucrats have also been arrested and later released on bail over the last one year.
