The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that the 2022 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be played in Mumbai and Pune cities of Maharashtra. The league stage matches of the 15th season of IPL will be played in three stadiums in Mumbai and one in Pune. IPL 2022 is going to start at the end of March, but before that, some teams of IPL have raised objections about Mumbai Indians.
Actually, due to Corona, the BCCI has restricted the IPL to a single state, so that it is easy to make bio-bubbles and air travel can be avoided. However, Mumbai Indians can benefit from this, because the home ground of the Mumbai team is the Wankh and in such a situation, Mumbai will be the only team, which will get a chance to play in its host. For this reason, some franchisees have objected to it.
IPL matches are to be held at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, Brabon Stadium, and Navi Mumbai's DY Patil Cricket Stadium apart from Maharashtra Cricket Association Cricket Stadium in Pune. As a result, other franchises have raised their voice against BCCI for playing their matches at Mumbai Indians' homes. There was no home advantage for any team in the last season of the tournament, as all teams had to play matches on different grounds due to Corona.
According to Cricbuzz, a total of 55 matches will be hosted at these three venues while Pune is set to host 15 matches in the 2022 IPL. All the ten franchises will play three matches each at Brabourne Stadium and Pune, while Wankhede Stadium and DY Patil Stadium will host the team four times each. As a result, Mumbai Indians will be the only franchise this season to play a total of four matches at the Wankhede Stadium, giving them a slight advantage.
Franchisees have no problem with Mumbai Indians playing their match at a ground other than the Wankhede Stadium. However, the BCCI is yet to announce the final schedule for the tournament and it will be interesting to see whether home matches are allotted to the five-time champions.
A franchise source told TOI, "No other team is getting home matches. It would be unfair if Mumbai Indians play a lot of their matches at Wankhede, which has been their haunt for years. The franchise has raised this concern. "Franchise will not have any problem if Mumbai Indians play most of their matches at DY Patil Stadium and Pune. Even Brabourne Stadium is fine. Hopefully, BCCI will look into the matter."
