Diabetes, diabetes, and sugar. This is a disease that once happened to someone, it stays with him for the rest of his life. This is a metabolic disorder. In this, the patient's pancreas stops producing insulin or produces it in very small amounts. Due to this the level of glucose in the blood increases. Due to this our metabolism is affected.
The report of the International Diabetes Federation says that till 2019 there were about 77 million patients with diabetes in the country. By 2030, this number could be 100 million. India ranks second in terms of diabetes occurring in the 20-79 age group.
Also know ICMR's 50:20 mantra on diabetes
The Indian Council of Medical Research India (ICMR) recently conducted a study, in which it was told that to get rid of diabetes and pre-diabetes, carbohydrates in your diet should be 50-55%. Protein and fat should be around 20-20%.
Our experts today are Dr. V Mohan, Author, ICMR Study, Dr. Rakesh Prasad, Diabetes Specialist, Noida, and Dietician Ankita Gupta Sehgal from Delhi.
Question- What is the difference between diabetes and pre-diabetes?
Dr. Rakesh Prasad- Pre-diabetes is said to be diabetes, in which the patient's sugar level is between 110-126 in the morning on an empty stomach. If the sugar level is checked after 2 hours of eating, then it is between 140-200.
Similarly, in diabetes, the patient's sugar level is more than 126 in the morning on an empty stomach and more than 200 after 2 hours of eating.
Question- What should be the diet chart to follow the 50-20 ratio of ICMR?
Dietician Ankita Gupta Sehgal- We can't say the perfect quantity for this ratio. Whether you eat 1 bowl of rice, 2 roti or 1 bowl of lentils, etc., we cannot decide anything.
Remember that any diet chart is prepared by looking at the patient's body, dosage, and weight. However, we can tell that by eating what kind of food you can take less carbohydrate and more protein. This will help diabetic patients to a great extent.
Question- Is there a different food ratio for women and men by ICMR?
Dr. V Mohan- Yes, to get rid of diabetes, women should eat 2% fewer carbohydrates than men. Men should eat 50-55% less, then women should eat 48-53% less.
People who are not physically active, take 4% fewer carbohydrates than active people.
Question- How much carbohydrate and protein do a common person or diabetic patient (who does not abstain) take daily?
Dr. V Mohan- 60-75% of our total caloric intake is carbohydrates and only 10% is protein. Along with white rice, more wheat is also harmful to the health of diabetic patients.
Question- What should diabetic patients eat and what should not?
Answer- Eat these things:
Apples, Oranges, Berries, Guavas, Watermelons, and Pears
Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cucumber, Spinach, Gourd, and Bitter gourd
Oats and Brown Rice
Beans and Lentils
Almonds, Walnuts, and Pistachios
Chia Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds, and Flax Seeds
olive oil, sesame oil
Do not eat these things:
Full Cream Milk, Cheese, and Butter
Cookies, ice cream, and sweets
Mutton
Packaged juices, sodas, and energy drinks
White Sugar, Brown Sugar, Honey, and Maple Syrup
Chips, processed popcorn, and processed meats
After confirming pre-diabetes, follow these 3 things with the advice of a doctor
Make exercise and yoga a habit. If the body remains active, then immunity and metabolism increase.
Quit alcohol and cigarettes. Both of these increase the risk of failure of insulin function.
Lack of sleep can also become a reason for diabetes. This can put you at risk of insulin resistance. Make sure to get 8 hours of sleep every day.

Look at these figures and become aware of your diet and lifestyle-
8 crore people are victims of pre-diabetic. Most people are rapidly converting from pre-diabetes to diabetes.
According to Dr. V. Mohan, the number of diabetic patients will double in the coming 20 years. The biggest reason for this happening is taking a high carbohydrate diet.
According to research published in Indian J Endocrinal Metab, 2015, there are approximately 97 thousand 700 children with type-1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) in India.
The number of children with type 2 diabetes has also increased.
66.11% of the children had 'abnormal levels of sugar', according to the Pan India 2015 survey.
