Major action has been taken against Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi in Maharashtra. He has been suspended from the current session of the Assembly in the matter of comment related to Aurangzeb. Earlier, the issue of Abu Asim Azmi's statement praising Mughal emperor Aurangzeb dominated both houses of the Maharashtra Legislature on Tuesday. Members of the ruling coalition 'Mahayuti' demanded Azmi's suspension from the Maharashtra Assembly and registration of a sedition case against him, after which he backtracked from his statement.
The Mumbai Police had started an investigation against Abu Azmi in the case of his comment praising Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. On the complaint of Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske in the Lok Sabha, the police in neighboring Thane registered an FIR against Azmi on Monday for allegedly trying to hurt religious sentiments. Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde once again targeted Azmi and termed him a traitor.
Abu Azmi had called Aurangzeb a 'great administrator'
While talking to the media in Mumbai, Azmi had said, 'All wrong history is being shown. Aurangzeb built many temples... Aurangzeb was not cruel.' In an interview with a news channel, the SP leader had said, 'As much as I have read about Aurangzeb, he never took public money for himself, his rule extended to Burma (present Myanmar), at that time the country was called the golden bird.' He had said that I think he was a great administrator, there were many Hindu commanders in his army.
Also gave clarification
Meanwhile, Abu also clarified his comment. He wrote, 'My words have been distorted. I have said the same thing about Aurangzeb Rahmatullah Aleh, that historians and writers have said. I have not made any derogatory comment about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Sambhaji Maharaj, or any other great men, but still, if anyone is hurt by my statement, then I take back my words, my statement. This matter is being made a political issue and I believe that closing the budget session of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly due to this is causing harm to the people of Maharashtra.'
Where did the controversy start?
This latest controversy has arisen from a Bollywood film Chhava centered on Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the eldest son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire. This film is directed by Laxman Uterkar. It shows Sambhaji's life, coronation, and struggle against the Mughal Empire, especially Aurangzeb. Vicky Kaushal played the role of Sambhaji in the film, while Rashmi Mandana played the role of his wife Yesubai Bhosale. Akshay Khanna has played the role of Aurangzeb in the film.
Azmi has supported Aurangzeb earlier too.
This is not the first time that Abu Azmi has supported Aurangzeb, but he has been praising him earlier too. In the year 2023, he had given a similar statement, after which he received death threats. At that time a complaint was lodged at the Colaba police station in Mumbai.
