On Sunday, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Budget 2026 in the Lok Sabha. A general discussion on the budget is scheduled to take place in Parliament on Monday. This discussion is part of the ongoing budget session and will be followed by detailed debates and voting on the demands for grants.

Statements made by the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, to reporters after the budget presentation, suggest that he may speak in the House. According to parliamentary procedure, members will debate the broad framework of the budget during the general discussion before the ministry-wise scrutiny later.

What did Rahul Gandhi say?

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, declined to comment on the Union Budget outside Parliament on Sunday, saying he would speak in the House. When asked by reporters for his thoughts on the budget, Rahul Gandhi said, "I will speak on the floor of Parliament tomorrow."

The Congress leader was accompanied by his sister, Priyanka Gandhi. Both left the Parliament premises without answering further questions from the media. Later, the Congress MP listed on the social media platform X the main concerns that he said the budget failed to address.

'Unaware of India's real crises.'

He wrote in the post, "No jobs for the youth. Declining manufacturing. Investors are pulling out capital. Household savings are rapidly decreasing. Farmers in distress. Impending global shocks – all ignored. A budget that refuses to course correct, unaware of India's real crises."
