Californium: The Crime Investigation Department (CID) has recovered a very expensive radioactive metal Californium from the Kolkata airport area. CID officials have arrested two people with this metal. The arrested Sailon Karmakar and Asit Ghosh are residents of the Hooghly district.
Californium is a very expensive radioactive material. The cost of one gram of this is Rs 17 crore. The CID seized 250 grams of californium from two people, the value of which is said to be Rs 4,250 crore.
What is californium?
Californium is a radioactive chemical element with the symbol Cf and atomic number 98. The element was first synthesized in 1950 at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (then the University of California Radiation Laboratory) by bombarding curium with alpha particles (helium-4 ions). It is an actinide element, the sixth transuranium element to be synthesized, and has the second-largest atomic mass of all elements that have been produced in sufficient quantities for the unaided eye (after einsteinium) to be seen. Element name university and the US The state was named after California.
What is californium?
Professor Satyaban Bhunia of the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics said that "Californium is a substance, an element that is not available in nature. It can be obtained from mines. It is synthesized artificially in a laboratory-like Bartlium. When irradiated with neutrons and plutonium when irradiated with neutrons for a longer period it turns into californium."
According to Professor Satyaban Bhunia, for example, fuel has to be put in a nuclear reactor first and then the nuclear reaction has to be started. So in fuel, this californium is a very strong source of neutrons, so this neutron starts this nuclear reaction. It acts as fire and starts a nuclear reaction, without it the nuclear reaction would be very slow and the heat would not be much. This is the first and foremost use. Also nowadays people use it in cancer therapy, which means it is used in radiation therapy. It is also used in neutron spectroscopic. It is also used where oil drilling takes place. It is a portable source of neutrons."
Where is californium found?
Bhunia said, "Neutrons usually don't get carried around. Californium is a very small soft metal that can be cut with a knife. I don't know what they found, I mean which isotope it is because Isotope 252 is the most important and has a lifetime of 2.6-2.7 years. So the power goes down to 1.5 years. So we'll have to see, I don't know what it is. So it's mostly used in civilian nuclear power and just a Let's say the place where oil drilling is happening or there are other things. So here it is found out through neutron spectroscopic whether to continue drilling or whether there is more oil or not. So, mostly it is these things and neutrons in other places Can be spectroscopic. In material failure let's say the material is brought up and down several times to check if there is slight fatigue or neutron source that comes back. But mostly it is used as a nuclear reactor is done."
How harmful is californium to humans?
Neutrons can damage human red blood cells. 252 is a very strong source for the long run. There are many sources of 252, so it can kill red blood cells instantly. There can be many problems, but if you are exposed to it for a long time, it can kill the red blood cells. Exposure to this can increase the risk of leukemia and blood cancer.
How does it affect the human body?
It is a radioactive material. Every radioactive substance is harmful to the human body. Now, this californium consists mostly of neutrons, a strong source of neutrons that can kill your red blood cells instantly. If you are exposed to this neutron for months and years, you will not know what is happening to you. Therefore it can destroy your red blood cells which in prolonged exposure can lead to leukemia or blood cancer.
