Californium: The Crime Investigation Department (CID) has recovered a very expensive radioactive metal Californium from the Kolkata airport area. CID officials have arrested two people with this metal. The arrested Sailon Karmakar and Asit Ghosh are residents of the Hooghly district.
Californium is a very expensive radioactive material. The cost of one gram of this is Rs 17 crore. The CID seized 250 grams of californium from two people, the value of which is said to be Rs 4,250 crore.
What is californium?
Californium is a radioactive chemical element with the symbol Cf and atomic number 98. The element was first synthesized in 1950 at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (then the University of California Radiation Laboratory) by bombarding curium with alpha particles (helium-4 ions). It is an actinide element, the sixth transuranium element to be synthesized, and has the second-largest atomic mass of all elements that have been produced in sufficient quantities for the unaided eye (after einsteinium) to be seen. According to Professor Satyaban Bhunia, for example, fuel has to be put in a nuclear reactor first and then the nuclear reaction has to be started. So in fuel, this californium is a very strong source of neutrons, so this neutron starts this nuclear reaction. It acts as fire and starts a nuclear reaction, without it the nuclear reaction would be very slow and the heat would not be much. This is the first and foremost use. Also nowadays people use it in cancer therapy, which means it is used in radiation therapy. It is also used in neutron spectroscopic. It is also used where oil drilling takes place. It is a portable source of neutrons."
Where is californium found?
Bhunia said, "Neutrons usually don't get carried around. Californium is a very small soft metal that can be cut with a knife. I don't know what they found, I mean which isotope it is because Isotope 252 is the most important and has a lifetime of 2.6-2.7 years. So the power goes down to 1.5 years.
