The Government of India has issued a notification to implement the Cashless Treatment Scheme across the country. Under which every road accident victim will be able to get free treatment up to a maximum of Rs 1.5 lakh per accident. According to the gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, this scheme has come into effect from May 5, 2025.
Treatment will be available in any road accident.
According to the notification issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, if any person has a road accident due to a motor vehicle, then he will get free treatment facility in any part of the country under this scheme. The accident victim will not have to pay any money for treatment in government or designated hospitals.
Free treatment facility for 7 days after the accident
Under this scheme, the victim will be given free treatment up to a maximum of Rs 1,50,000 for the next seven days from the date of the accident. This facility will be fully applicable only in those hospitals which have been "designated" by the government.
Only primary treatment in other hospitals
If for some reason the victim is unable to get the designated hospital and treatment is done in any other hospital. Then in that case, only treatment till stabilization in that hospital will be covered under this scheme. Separate guidelines have been issued in this regard.
National Health Authority will implement the scheme
The responsibility of implementing this scheme has been entrusted to the National Health Authority (NHA). This institution will work in collaboration with the police, hospitals, and state-level health agencies so that the scheme can be implemented effectively.
Road Safety Council will be the nodal agency at the state level
The State Road Safety Council will be the nodal agency of this scheme in every state or union territory. This council will monitor that the scheme is implemented properly, hospitals are linked to the scheme, victims are treated and the payment process runs properly.
The central government will form a steering committee
The central government will also form a steering committee (monitoring committee) for effective monitoring of the scheme. Which will ensure whether the scheme is being followed properly or not.
The pilot program started in March 2024
It is worth noting that on March 14, 2024, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways started the pilot program of this scheme, learning from which it has now been implemented at the national level.
