US President Trump, who imposed tariffs on India for buying oil from Russia, is now getting surrounded in his own country on this issue. Senior US leader and presidential contender Nikki Haley has said that America should not spoil relations with a strong ally like India.
Nikki Haley advised the Trump administration.
Nikki Haley wrote in a post shared on the social media platform X that, 'India should not buy oil from Russia. But China, which is an adversary and the biggest buyer of Russian and Iranian oil, has been given a 90-day relaxation in tariffs. Do not give an exemption to China and do not spoil your relationship with a strong ally like India.' Former South Carolina Governor Haley was the US Ambassador to the United Nations during Trump's first term and became the first Indian-American to be appointed to a cabinet-level post in the US administration.
Nikki Haley's remarks came hours after Trump said India has not been a good trading partner and announced that he would substantially raise tariffs on India in the next 24 hours. Trump alleged that India was buying oil from Russia and fuelling Russia's fight against Ukraine.
India had hit back
After Trump's threat to raise tariffs on India, India on Monday hit back at the US and the European Union in an unusually sharp manner. The Indian Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying, "India imports oil from Russia to provide cheap and stable energy to its consumers. The countries that are criticising India are themselves trading with Russia. Unlike India, their trade is not a compulsion for them. India started importing oil from Russia because traditional supplies were diverted to Europe after the conflict. At that time, the US itself encouraged India to make such imports so that the stability of the world oil market could be maintained." Trump's statement - Our relations with China are very good
Responding to a question related to China and its leader, Xi Jinping, in an interview, Trump said, 'We have a very good relationship. We respect them a lot. They respect us a lot.' Trump further said that if we agree, then possibly he can meet the Chinese President before the end of this year. He said that if there is no agreement, then they will not meet. Trump further said that China is very dependent on America. My relations with them are very good. I think we will make a good deal. It is not necessary, but I think we will make a good deal.'
