Cyclone Remal: Heavy rains cause devastation in Northeast, search for missing people continues in Mizoram, roads submerged in Manipur

Almost all the states of the Northeast including West Bengal have been affected due to cyclone Remal. Many areas of these states were submerged due to heavy rains. Roads were washed away due to the rising waters of rivers, due to which normal life is being greatly affected. More than 2,140 trees were uprooted and about 1,700 electricity poles also fell due to the effect of Cyclone Remal in West Bengal. Due to heavy rains on Tuesday, the road connecting Haflong-Silchar in the Dima Hasao district of Assam was washed away. At present, the Haflong-Silchar connecting road has been closed until June 1.

 

Rescue operations continue to find missing people in Mizoram

 

Due to heavy rains in Mizoram, a mine collapsed on the outskirts of the capital Aizawl on Tuesday. 27 people died in this accident, out of which 25 bodies were recovered. An operation was launched on Wednesday to find missing people in many places. Many people went missing due to landslides. 25 personnel from the 3rd MAP, 22 personnel from the 1st MAP, and 10 personnel from the 5th IR Battalion have been deployed at the site for rescue operations.

 

Landslides in several areas have caused the collapse of several houses and labor camps, leaving at least 22 people buried under the debris. However, there has been no rainfall since this morning. Five people were rescued in Hlimen in Aizawl district, while four are still missing. Rescue operations are on to trace the missing persons. A building collapsed due to a landslide in Salem Veng, leaving three people missing. Their bodies were later recovered.

 

One body each was recovered from Phalcon, Lungsei, and Kelsih in the Aizawl district. Aizawl was cut off from the rest of the country due to a landslide on National Highway 6 in Hunthar due to the impact of heavy rains. Mizoram's Chief Minister has said that the government has sanctioned Rs 15 crore for compensation for losses caused by the disaster and relief work. The state government has also provided help to the affected families. The state government has announced financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh to the families of the deceased.

 

More than 100 people affected due to heavy rains in Manipur

 

More than 100 people were affected due to heavy rains near Imphal Valley in Manipur. Many areas were submerged due to the overflowing Imphal River. Water entered hundreds of houses. Thousands of people were shifted to safer places. Hingang and Khurai assembly constituencies of Imphal district have been badly affected. People trapped in flood-affected areas are being transported to safer areas by boats. The Irang Bailey Bridge on NH 37 connecting Imphal and Silchar collapsed on Tuesday evening after heavy rains, disrupting road communication.
