Protest against air pollution near India Gate
Police detained 15 people protesting near India Gate on Sunday against the rising levels of air pollution in Delhi-NCR. The protesters are accused of pepper-spraying a police team, injuring three to four policemen. All the injured are being treated at Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital.
According to information received, some protesters gathered in the C-Hexagon area of India Gate around 4:30 pm on Tuesday. Their primary objective was to register their protest against the continuously deteriorating air quality. However, after some time, the protesters started raising slogans in support of the Naxalite Hidma.
The police team present there instructed the protesters to disperse, but they did not comply and continued shouting slogans. Following this, the police initiated action to disperse the protesters. Police allege that during this time, the protesters used pepper spray on the police team, causing panic and a minor scuffle between the police and the protesters.
A police officer stated that three to four policemen were injured by the pepper spray and complained of eye irritation. They were immediately admitted to the nearby RML Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.
Police action before the FIR was filed
The protest also caused significant traffic disruptions around India Gate. Police officials stated that 15 detained protesters were being questioned. Police have stated that cases under stringent sections will be filed against those involved in violent behavior and assaulting the police force.
The police have appealed to the general public to express their grievances and protests in a peaceful and lawful manner, so that the security and order of public places are not affected. Security has been tightened in the India Gate area following this incident.
