The Delhi Traffic Police launched a strict campaign to ensure road safety in the capital during the New Year celebrations, resulting in 868 challans (fines) being issued for drunk driving on New Year's Eve. A senior official provided this information on Thursday.
The official said that special enforcement teams were deployed on major roads, nightlife hubs, and residential areas across the city to curb drunk driving, speeding, bike stunts, and other dangerous traffic violations. Breathalyzer tests were conducted at various checkpoints throughout the night, and teams frequently changed their locations to prevent motorists from evading checks.
In addition to traffic enforcement, nearly 20,000 Delhi Police personnel were deployed to maintain law and order. Real-time coordination between CCTV cameras and district control rooms was utilized for crowd monitoring and swift response to any incidents.
Special focus on crowded areas
According to the police, special attention was given to crowded areas such as Connaught Place, Hauz Khas, and Aerocity. The Delhi Police stated that the objective of this campaign was not only to take action against violators but also to send a strong message against drunk driving, as it remains one of the major causes of road accidents.
