An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 on the Richter scale hit the Morigaon district of Assam in the early hours of Thursday. This information was given by the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The National Center for Seismology (NCS) said that the earthquake occurred at 2:25 am on Thursday and its epicenter was at a depth of 16 kilometers. Earlier, an earthquake of magnitude 5.1 on the Richter scale hit the Bay of Bengal in the early hours of Tuesday.

The threat of strong earthquake in Assam

 

It falls under seismic zone V, which means that there is a high risk of strong tremors here. In the past few years, the region has witnessed some major earthquakes, such as the 1950 Assam-Tibet earthquake (magnitude 8.6) and the 1897 Shillong earthquake (magnitude 8.1) - both among the strongest quakes in history.

 

This comes days after a 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Bay of Bengal, with tremors felt in Kolkata and many parts of West Bengal. The NCS said the quake struck at 6:10 am on February 25. An India Meteorological Department official told the media that the quake was recorded near Puri in Odisha.

 

The earthquake struck at a depth of 91 km in the Bay of Bengal, the official said. Though the tremors caused momentary panic among Kolkata residents, there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
