The Election Commission on Thursday said it has developed a prototype of a remote electronic voting machine for local migrant voters. Political parties have been invited for their demonstration on 16 January. A note has also been issued regarding remote voting machines. Political parties have also been asked to express their views on implementing it legally, administratively, and technically.
Participation will increase in democracy
The Multi Constituency Remote EVM manufactured by a public sector company can operate 72 constituencies from a single location. Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar said that because of the apathy seen among the youth and people living in urban areas towards elections, remote voting machines would prove to be an effective initiative to increase participation in the democratic process.
EVM proved to be a milestone in electoral reforms
It is noteworthy that in 1977, the Election Commission entrusted the Hyderabad-based Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) with the responsibility of making electronic voting machines for voting, to get rid of the complicated and tedious process of voting through ballot papers. The Institute developed its prototype in 1979 with the help of Bharat Electronics Limited, Bengaluru, and the Election Commission presented it to political parties in 1980.
Used for the first time in 1982
If we use it in elections, its first use of EVM was done in 1982 in the general elections in Kerala. It was used for the first time in 1998 in limited numbers in the assembly elections of Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, and Rajasthan. It is being used in all assembly elections after 2001. Along with this, it was used for voting in 543 parliamentary constituencies in the Lok Sabha elections held in 2004. Since the introduction of EVMs, the process of voting and counting votes has become easier. In recent times, due to the decreasing trend of youth and urban people toward elections, the need for Remote Electronic Voting Machines was felt for a long time.
