The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Friday, January 3 imposed Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) stage 3 restrictions in the Delhi NCR region after air pollution levels once again spiked. The action is in line with the committee's Graded Response Action Plan for the Delhi-NCR region. According to the CAQM, Delhi's AQI was recorded at 375 at 7 pm on Friday. This falls in the 'very poor' air quality category.
The Centre's panel on air quality of Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) has directed the region's authorities to immediately enforce the restrictions prescribed under stage 3 to prevent the situation from worsening further, an official order said.
Under GRAP Stage 3, the use of BS 3 petrol and BS 4 diesel four-wheelers is prohibited in Delhi and adjoining NCR districts. Stage 3 also bans non-essential diesel-powered medium goods vehicles of BS4 or older standards in Delhi.
Not only this, GRAP Stage 3 restrictions also prohibit non-essential construction work. Under these restrictions, students studying in classes up to class 5 will also have to shift to hybrid mode. Parents and students have the option to select online education wherever available.
CAQM notice
The notice issued by CAQM said, "To prevent further deterioration in air quality and in compliance with the directions of the Hon'ble Supreme Court, the Sub Committee on GRAP has decided to implement all actions under Phase-III (Delhi's 'severe' air quality) of the existing schedule of GRAP with immediate effect. Which will be taken by all concerned agencies in Delhi-NCR in addition to the already implemented Phase-1 actions." It said, "The actions under Phases I, II, and III of the revised GRAP will be implemented, monitored, and reviewed by all the concerned agencies across the NCR to ensure that the AQI levels do not fall further. All implementing agencies will closely monitor and intensify the measures in the revised GRAP schedule. Citizens are requested to strictly follow the Citizen Charter under GRAP Phase-III."
