Union Home Minister Amit Shah has directed the administration to work on a war footing after suspected cases of typhoid surfaced in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. According to a statement issued by the state government, nearly 100 suspected cases of typhoid, a waterborne disease, have been reported in Sector-24, Sector-28, and Adiwada areas of the city due to leaks in the water pipeline. Shah has ordered the immediate repair of the pipelines.
113 Typhoid Cases in Gandhinagar So Far
It is worth noting that 113 suspected cases of typhoid have been reported in the state capital so far. Of these, 19 patients have been discharged after treatment, while 94 patients are currently undergoing treatment at Gandhinagar Civil Hospital and health centers in Sectors 24 and 29. Their condition is reported to be stable.
24/7 OPD Services in Affected Areas
The statement said that 24/7 Outpatient Department (OPD) services have been started in the affected areas. Food arrangements have also been made for the families of patients undergoing treatment at the civil hospital. According to the release, Shah is in constant touch with Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, the District Collector, and the Municipal Commissioner to stay updated on the current situation.
Strict Instructions to Health Department Officials
The release stated that on Sunday, Shah held a telephonic discussion with health department officials and asked them to ensure that children and citizens affected by typhoid receive prompt and accurate treatment.
He also instructed the officials to provide food to the affected patients and their families at Gandhinagar Civil Hospital. In addition, he ordered the immediate repair and thorough inspection of pipeline leaks in the affected and surrounding areas to prevent further spread of the disease.
Municipal Corporation Teams Conduct Survey
In view of the suspected typhoid cases, intensive health management and survey work have been carried out by 75 health teams in Gandhinagar city. Survey teams from the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation have so far inspected more than 20,800 houses and covered over 90,000 people. As a precautionary measure, 30,000 chlorine tablets and 20,600 ORS packets have been distributed.
The survey teams are going door-to-door, interacting with residents, distributing awareness leaflets, and urging them to boil water, avoid eating outside food, and maintain proper hand hygiene.
The statement added that the process of "super chlorination" of water has been intensified to control the spread of the disease, and the chlorine levels in the drinking water are also being monitored. Meanwhile, some leaks found in the pipelines in the affected areas have been repaired immediately.
