ONGC expert teams from Mumbai and Delhi have been dispatched to the site to extinguish a massive fire at a gas well in Dr. BR Ambedkar Konaseema district of Andhra Pradesh. Officials said on Tuesday that the intensity of the fire had decreased somewhat compared to Monday, but an assessment by experts is necessary to bring it completely under control.
Fire broke out on January 5th
According to reports, a jet fire, approximately 20 meters high and 25 meters wide, erupted at the ONGC Mori-5 gas well near Mori and Irusumanda villages around 12:40 PM on January 5th following a leak. Although this well is not directly operated by ONGC, its production enhancement work is being carried out by Ahmedabad-based Deep Industries Limited.
Firefighters sprayed water to reduce the temperature.
Joint Collector T. Nishanthi said that firefighters have created a water curtain to reduce the temperature, and water is being continuously sprayed on the surrounding trees. She said that flames are still rising, but their intensity has decreased compared to Monday. The expert teams will assess the situation, and measures to extinguish the fire will be decided based on their assessment.
People from nearby villages evacuated to safe places
According to officials, ONGC, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Red Cross personnel, along with the revenue, police, and fire departments, are involved in the firefighting operation. As a precautionary measure, about 600 people from three nearby villages were evacuated to safe places on Monday.
According to reports, Deep Industries Limited had secured a Rs 1,402 crore contract in 2024 for production enhancement at ONGC's Rajamahendravaram asset and has been operating the Mori-5 well for about a year. Officials are hopeful of bringing the fire under control soon, although the timeframe for completely extinguishing it will be determined only after the assessment.
