Hyderabad, Feb 14 (IANS) Hyderabad police Saturday cancelled permission for a public meeting, which was scheduled to be addressed by a cleric from the Ahle Hadees sect of Muslims.
Police withdrew the permission in the last minute on the ground that Maulana Sheikh Meraj Rabbani's speech could disturb peace and law and order situation in the city.
The public meet titled "Islamic peace conference" was scheduled to be held Saturday night at Quli Qutub Shah Stadium in the old city.
An order issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police, south zone, V. Satyanarayana, said Sunni scholars were opposing the meet as the speeches of Maulana Rabbani which are circulated on social media are against the teaching of holy Quran and Hadith.
"His inflammatory speeches circulated on social media are creating tensions among the different groups of people in Hyderabad old city," it noted.
The police officer also pointed out that the cleric was booked by Mumbai police in 2010 for provocative speech.
