The ongoing crisis at India's leading airline, IndiGo (Indigo Flights Crisis), is hitting millions of passengers the hardest. Because of the flight cancellations, they are now being forced to pay ten times more to book alternative flights. In fact, the airfare between Mumbai and Delhi has now exceeded ₹50,000. Normally, the airfare on this route is between ₹6,000 and ₹7,000, but due to IndiGo's flight cancellations, other airlines have drastically increased their fares.
The Delhi-Mumbai route is one of the busiest air routes in the country. The airfare between these two metropolitan cities has now crossed ₹50,000 in economy class, which would normally be around ₹20,000 even for last-minute bookings.
Fares are Highest on Weekends
On the Paytm app's flight booking section, the fare for flights from Mumbai to Delhi on December 5th reached ₹46,899. On December 6th, it was seen at ₹23,589.
Meanwhile, on Air India's website, the fare for December 6th between Mumbai and Delhi is showing as ₹24,000 in economy class, ₹28,000 in premium economy, and ₹50,000 in business class.
Over 300 Flights Cancelled
IndiGo has cancelled more than 300 domestic and international flights. This has affected services at Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and other airports. The airline is facing a severe shortage of pilots and crew due to challenges in implementing new rostering rules.
The DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) has summoned IndiGo to explain the current operational problems and to present a detailed plan to mitigate the disruptions.
