Iran's Revolutionary Court has sentenced an anti-government protester to death amid continuing unrest in the country. Along with this, five other people have been sentenced to imprisonment. Cases are being filed against those arrested for participating in anti-government protests here for the past few weeks. This is the first time that a protester has been given the death penalty.
Iran's judiciary-related news website Mizan reported that the protester was sentenced to death for setting fire to a government building. Apart from this, five others were sentenced to 5 to 10 years on charges of violating national security and public order.
The demonstration started after Mahsa Amini's death
Countrywide protests broke out in Iran following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody on 16 September. Amini was detained for violating Iran's strict dress code for women. The protests initially focused on the mandatory wearing of the hijab in Iran, but have since escalated into one of the biggest challenges to the ruling regime since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
'More than 300 people killed in demonstrations
