During the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan, the US Defense Ministry Pentagon has made big revelations in the case of a suicide bombing at Kabul Airport. A military investigation into the attack has concluded that the attack was carried out alone by a suicide bomber carrying nine kilograms (20 pounds) of explosives. The Pentagon says that the deaths of 170 Afghan civilians and 13 US soldiers killed in the blast could not have been prevented.
The explosion took place outside the Abbey Gate on 26 August at Kabul Airport. In this, 11 US Marines, a Sailor, and a Soldier were killed. All of them were investigating thousands of Afghan civilians trying to leave the country after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan. The Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K) then claimed responsibility for the attack.
The wounds of the wounded were so fatal that they could not be saved
On Friday, military officials at the Pentagon provided minute-to-minute details of the attack using graphics. He said the wounds of those who lost their lives in the attack were so dangerous that they could not be saved. He also said that initially it was thought that shots were fired in the attack, but this did not turn out to be true.
'Even soldiers wearing anti-bomb jackets and helmets did not survive'
The head of US Central Command, General Frank McKenzie, said: "The attack on the Abbey Gate was carried out with an explosive device, killing 170 Afghan civilians and 13 American soldiers." The extent to which this device was dangerous can be gauged from the fact that despite wearing the best anti-bomb jackets and helmets, American soldiers died, he said.
'The Taliban did not know about the attack'
Investigators said the attackers approached the gate by dodging the Taliban and other security posts. He said it appeared that the Taliban did not know about the attack, that security precautions were being taken and that intelligence about the potential threats that were being circulated that day was unclear. Brigadier General Lance Curtis, who led the investigation, said: "Based on our investigation, this could not have been stopped at a tactical level."
