The Supreme Court will hear the case of rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital today. The apex court has taken suo motu cognizance of the case of rape and murder of a junior doctor and vandalism in the hospital. Taking cognizance of the incident, a bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud has placed the case on top of the cause list for hearing at 10:30 am on Tuesday. According to the cause list of August 20 uploaded on the website of the apex court, the bench will consist of Chief Justice Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Mishra.
The trainee female doctor was raped and murdered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College on the intervening night of August 9. Her body was found the next morning, after which doctors have been protesting. In this case, the Calcutta High Court has transferred the investigation from the Bengal Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The apex court has taken suo motu cognizance keeping in mind the fact that the Calcutta High Court is already involved in the case. Keeping in mind the ongoing protests across the country, especially the doctors and their concerns, the apex court may expand the scope of judicial investigation.
Doctors' strike completed one week
The doctors' strike in the case completed one week on Sunday, causing inconvenience to patients. The protesters demand that the CBI catch the culprits and the court give them maximum punishment. Apart from this, they want an assurance from the government that no such incident will happen again in future.
The High Court ordered the transfer of the investigation to the CBI while hearing the petitions, which also included the plea of the victim's parents for a court-monitored investigation.
The former principal questioned on the fourth day
At the same time, the CBI questioned the former principal of RG Kar Medical College Sandeep Ghosh for the fourth consecutive day on Monday. Ghosh reached the CBI headquarters at CGO Complex in the morning. The agency is mainly questioning Ghosh to determine his role in the entire case. Now he has been asked questions related to getting information about the murder of the junior doctor, passing on this information to the police and the family, getting the building repaired around where the body was found, etc. The CBI also wanted to know from him why he resigned two days after the murder.
One was arrested for revealing the identity of the victim
In Kolkata, the police have arrested a person for revealing the identity of the victim. The police said that in the complaint lodged at the Taltala police station, it was said that three stories related to the dead female doctor had been shared on an account named KirtiSocial on Instagram and the victim's picture and identity had been revealed in it. Along with this, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also been threatened. The police have not revealed the identity of the arrested person.
