Manipur Violence: A hearing will be held in SC today in the Manipur case, Center filed an affidavit and said- the investigation handed over to CBI

The Supreme Court will hear the case of women roaming without clothes in the northeastern state of Manipur today. Before that, the Center filed an affidavit on Thursday stating that the investigation of the matter has been handed over to the CBI. The apex court, taking suo motu cognizance of the matter, had sought a response from the central and state government as to what action they have taken in the matter.

 

'Zero tolerance approach towards crime against women

The Center on Thursday told the Supreme Court that the government's approach is zero tolerance towards any crime against women. A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud directed the Center and the Manipur government to take immediate remedial, rehabilitative, and preventive steps and apprise them of the action taken.

 

'Investigation handed over to CBI'

The home ministry, in an affidavit filed through its secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla, also urged the top court to transfer the trial outside Manipur in the case in which seven people have been arrested so far. Filing its reply to this, the Center said,

 

Using women to perpetrate violence is 'unacceptable'

The viral video from Manipur had surfaced last week. The apex court had on July 20 taken note of the incident and said it was disturbed by the video. The use of women to perpetrate violence is 'unacceptable in a constitutional democracy'.
