Punjab Kings have been displaying a formidable performance over the past two seasons. Last season, the team finished as runners-up, coming agonizingly close to the title before narrowly missing out. This season, too, the team has delivered a strong performance so far, and one key reason for this is the team's captain, Shreyas Iyer. While Iyer has been dominating with the bat in IPL 2026, on Thursday, during the match against the Mumbai Indians, he became the center of attention for his exceptional fielding.

Punjab defeated Mumbai by seven wickets on their home turf. Batting first, the host team posted a total of 195 runs for the loss of six wickets. Punjab successfully chased down this target in 16.3 overs, losing just three wickets in the process. Captain Iyer played a magnificent innings of 66 runs off 35 balls, studded with five fours and four sixes. Prabhsimran Singh played a match-winning, unbeaten knock of 80 runs off 39 balls, featuring 11 fours and two sixes, to guide the team to victory.

Iyer's Astonishing Catch

The Mumbai team appeared to be cruising toward a massive total, but their explosive batsmen failed to make an impact in the final overs. Arshdeep Singh not only took wickets but also successfully stemmed the flow of runs. Captain Hardik Pandya was dismissed while attempting to accelerate the scoring rate. His wicket was credited to Marco Jansen. The scorecard also listed Xavier Bartlett's name as the fielder who took the catch; however, the most crucial contribution to this dismissal came from Iyer.

Bowling the 18th over, Jansen delivered the third ball outside the off stump. Pandya reached out to the ball and struck it straight down the ground. The ball appeared to be sailing for a six, but Iyer, stationed at long-on, dove backward and plucked the ball out of the air while still airborne. Realizing that his momentum would carry him over the boundary line, Iyer instantly flicked the ball back into the field of play. Bartlett, who was standing nearby, completed the catch; consequently, his name—rather than Iyer's—was recorded in the official statistics.

Rohit and Surya Left Stunned

However, anyone who witnessed this catch knows just how spectacular a grab Iyer pulled off. Running backward and diving—catching the ball and flicking it back into the field of play just before tumbling over the boundary rope—requires an extraordinary level of fitness and situational awareness, qualities that Iyer demonstrated to perfection.

Iyer took this catch right near the Mumbai team's dugout, and the entire Mumbai camp was left utterly astonished by his effort. The reactions of Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav serve as a testament to just how magnificent a feat Iyer had accomplished.
