The Punjab government on Wednesday night removed the 13-month-long farmers' protest at Shambhu and Khanauri border with the help of police. The police demolished the platforms built on Khanauri and Shambhu borders using bulldozers and the work of uprooting the tents is also going on. Actually, the farmers were sitting on a dharna here since February 13, 2024. Earlier, the meeting of the central government and farmer organizations in Chandigarh on Wednesday remained inconclusive.
After the meeting ended, more than 300 farmers, including farmer leaders Jagjit Singh Dallewal, and Sarwan Singh Pandher, who were returning to Khanauri and Shambhu border, were taken into custody. Now the Amritsar-Ambala-Delhi National Highway will be opened on Thursday. However, the barricading put up on the Shambhu and Khanauri border has not been removed yet.
During the police action, there was a fierce scuffle between the farmers and the police, in which the turbans of some farmer leaders came off. The government has deployed about 5000 policemen on the Shambhu and Khanauri border. At the same time, internet services have also been shut down in the border area. Farmers took to the streets at different places in the state in protest against the police action. All farmer leaders, including the opposition, have opposed this action of the police.
