Pakistan's Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said on Friday that the name of the country's next army chief would be decided in about two days. In an interview with Pakistan's Geo News, Sanaullah said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has completed the process and will give it a paper form in two days. "I believe the Prime Minister has completed the process i.e. consultations regarding the appointment of the army chief and will put it on paper today or tomorrow or in the next two days," he said.

Prime Minister's prerogative to appoint army chief

He elaborated that the consultation was not meant to give some people the right to dictate terms, as it is the prime minister's prerogative to appoint the army chief. Recently, the exercise in the nuclear-armed country has attracted global attention because of the implications of the task undertaken by the army chief. Explain that the appointment of the successor of Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa is an administrative matter. Gen Bajwa is due to retire on 29 November.

The new army chief will be appointed soon

Explain that under the law, the current prime minister has the right to select any one of the top three-star generals. Sanaullah said that further delay in the appointment of the new army chief would not be appropriate. He did not answer any further questions on the issue as it is a matter of a day or two and more questions would lead to unnecessary speculation.

Confirmation of contact with PTI leaders

He also confirmed contact with some leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, including former Defense Minister Parvaz Khattak, former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, and former Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry, describing them as leaders with political understanding. He said that the purpose of PTI's Islamabad march was to appoint the army chief instead of in mid-term elections. He claimed that the Long March did not exist anywhere on the ground.
