Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a visit to Saudi Arabia today. This visit is taking place at the invitation of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The Prime Minister will be in Jeddah city on 22 and 23 April. Indian Ambassador Suhail Ejaz Khan gave information about his visit to Saudi Arabia. He said that the Prime Minister was coming to Jeddah. For centuries, Jeddah has been a port for pilgrims coming for Umrah and Haj. He informed that here both the leaders, Prime Minister Modi and Crown Prince, are going to chair the meeting of the Strategic Partnership Council. A large number of MoUs will be signed and exchanged during this visit.
Earlier recently, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri had given information about this visit of the PM. He said that this visit is very important for the relations between India and Saudi Arabia. Misri said, Saudi Arabia is a major voice in the Islamic world and it is now playing a big role in regional affairs as well. He also said Prime Minister Modi and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have good and warm relations. Their mutual understanding and high-level strategic thinking have further strengthened the relations between the two countries.
This visit of Prime Minister Modi will take place in Jeddah city of Saudi Arabia. During this, the Prime Minister will meet the Crown Prince. Also, there will be a formal welcome ceremony and bilateral talks. During the visit, both the leaders will chair the second meeting of the 'India-Saudi Strategic Partnership Council'.
PM Modi's first Saudi visit in the third term
Misri said that the two main pillars of this council are political and economic, which are handled by the ministers of both the countries. This will be Prime Minister Modi's first visit to Saudi Arabia in his third term. Earlier, he has visited there in 2016 and 2019. This visit is taking place when Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman visited India during the G20 summit in September 2023. At the same time, the first meeting of the Strategic Partnership Council was held.
Many agreements can be signed.
He said many agreements (MoUs) can be signed between the two countries during this visit. The agreements are in the final approval stage and full details will be shared during the visit. He said that about 27 lakh Indians live and work in Saudi Arabia. This is the second-largest group of Indian expatriates. Diplomatic relations between India and Saudi Arabia were established in 1947. In 2010, the relations between the two countries were elevated to the level of 'strategic partnership'. Since then, there have been regular high-level visits between the two countries. Since the beginning of the year 2024, 11 ministers of India have visited Saudi Arabia so far. Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister and Mineral Minister also visited India in November 2024 and February 2025.
The issue of the Russia-Ukraine war will be in the talks of the two leaders.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that the Russia-Ukraine war is going to be an important area of discussion. Prime Minister Modi has already made India's stand clear that this issue should be resolved through dialogue. All parties should sit at one table and find a solution to it. We are happy to see that something like this is happening. It is good that a partner like Saudi Arabia is involved again. I cannot say in advance what the nature of the talks will be. But I can say that this issue is going to be a major topic of discussion between the two leaders.
