He credited US President Donald Trump for convincing Russian President Vladimir Putin to meet with Zelensky. The German Chancellor said that the place where the meeting will take place has not been decided yet. Putin had agreed to this meeting during a phone conversation with Trump.

Merz said, 'We do not know whether the Russian President will have the courage to attend such a summit. Therefore, persuasion is needed.' Merz was part of the delegation of European leaders who went to Washington on Monday to support the Ukrainian President.

There will be a meeting in the next two weeks

During a break in the meeting, he told reporters, 'The US President spoke to the Russian President on the phone and it was agreed that there will be a meeting between the Russian President and the Ukrainian President in the next two weeks.'

Agreement to invite a trilateral meeting

Merz further said that Trump has agreed to invite another trilateral meeting later, so that the talks can really begin. The German Chancellor said that Trump is impressed that European countries are united. His discussions with the US administration will now focus on security guarantees for Ukraine.
