Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday paid tribute to all the policemen who were martyred in the line of duty on Police Smriti Diwas. Expressing gratitude to the policemen for all the sacrifices made for the country, he said that this is an occasion that honors the immense sacrifices made by them and their families to keep India safe.
'Salute to the immortal soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice'
Addressing the program on this occasion, he said, it is a matter of good fortune for me that today I have got a chance to pay floral tribute to the immortal soldiers here. These soldiers keep our borders safe. They protect the borders in temperatures of -50 to +50 degrees, I also pay my respects to their families for the supreme sacrifice they have made.
At the same time, he wrote in a post on social media 'X', On Police Smriti Diwas, I salute our martyrs who became immortal by their supreme sacrifice during their duty.
Chinese soldiers attacked in 1959
Let us tell you that on October 21, 1959, ten policemen were martyred in the line of duty during an attack by heavily armed Chinese soldiers at Hot Springs in Ladakh. Since then, every year 21 October is celebrated to honor these martyrs and all other policemen who have been martyred in the line of duty.
So far 36,468 policemen have been martyred.
On this occasion, Tapan Kumar Deka, Director of the Intelligence Bureau in Delhi said, Today on the occasion of Police Memorial Day, we all have gathered to pay tribute to those brave policemen who sacrificed their lives for the country last year. On 21 October 1959, 10 brave CRPF jawans sacrificed their lives for the country. Since that day we have been celebrating 21 October every year as Police Memorial Day. Last year 216 policemen sacrificed their lives for the country. Since independence, 36,468 policemen have sacrificed their lives for the country.
