Flood situation persists in Manipur and Assam due to continuous rains after cyclone Remal. In Manipur, 188143 people have been affected due to floods, while 24265 houses have been damaged. At the same time, the flood situation in Assam worsened on Thursday, affecting more than 1.98 lakh people in nine districts. One person drowned in Hailakandi district due to the rising water level of major rivers due to rain, taking the death toll due to floods and rains in the state since Tuesday to six, while 18 others have been injured.
Manipur Water Resources and Relief and Disaster Management Minister Awangbau Newmai said that a total of 18,103 people have been evacuated from the floods and 56 relief camps have been set up. He held a brief meeting with the Additional Chief Secretary, Deputy Commissioner of Imphal West and East, Relief and Disaster Management Directorate to review the flood situation and strategize immediate action on relief, search, and rescue operations. He said, about 401 hectares of crops have also been affected. Relief materials have been distributed in Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Noni, Churanchanpur, Senapati, and Kakching.
17 out of 18 broken river embankments sealed
At the same time, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said in a social media post that 17 of the river embankments have broken at 18 places, out of which 17 have been sealed. Given the severe floods caused by the breach in the embankments along the river, the government on Thursday issued a notification, declaring a two-day public holiday for all state offices till May 31. According to an official, citizens have been urged to remain indoors unless there is an emergency.

Meanwhile, according to the report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), a total of 1,98,856 people were affected in Nagaon, Karimganj, Hailakandi, West Karbi Anglong, Cachar, Hojai, Golaghat, Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts. The report said that the Brahmaputra and Barak rivers, along with their tributaries, are flowing above the danger mark at several places in the affected districts.
A total of 35,640 people have taken shelter in 110 relief camps, of which the highest number of 19,646 people are in Hojai, followed by 12,110 people in Cachar, 2,060 people in Hailakandi and 1,613 people in Karimganj.
