The American city of Seattle became the first city in the country to abolish caste discrimination. The local council in Seattle voted to include race in the city's anti-discrimination laws. The move addresses an issue important to the region's South Asian diaspora, particularly the Indian and Hindu communities.

The caste system is thousands of years old

Indian-American Seattle City Council member Kshama Sawant said, "The fight against caste discrimination is closely linked to the fight against all forms of oppression." Explain that the caste system dates back thousands of years and gives many privileges to the upper castes, but the lower castes do not get the rights. The Dalit community is at the lowest rung of the Indian Hindu caste system and is considered untouchable.

Examples have been seen in many places

Sawant said, “Caste discrimination does not happen only in other countries. This is what South Asian Americans and other immigrant working people have to face in their workplaces. Caste discrimination was outlawed in India 70 years ago, yet prejudice persists. According to several studies in recent years, people from lower castes have been under-represented in high-paying jobs.
