Indian ODI team vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to a hospital in Sydney and is currently in the ICU. Shreyas suffered an injury while fielding during the third ODI against Australia. It is being reported that Shreyas is suffering from internal bleeding. Shreyas suffered a left rib injury that could keep him out of action for at least three weeks, but now it appears his return to the field may be delayed. Iyer was injured while taking a catch off Australian batsman Alex Carey during the third ODI in Sydney.
How did Shreyas get injured?
The incident occurred when Carey played a high shot off Harshit Rana during the Australian innings. Iyer, standing at the backward point, ran quickly and successfully took the catch, but suffered a severe blow to his left ribs upon falling to the ground. He was subsequently forced off the field. After the match, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) updated Shreyas' health, stating that the batsman had been taken to the hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.
Shreyas will remain under observation for the time being.
Sources, quoting news agency PTI, said, "Shreyas has been admitted to the ICU for the past few days. After the reports came back, internal bleeding was detected, and he had to be admitted immediately. Depending on his recovery, he will be kept under observation for two to seven days, as this is necessary to prevent the spread of infection due to the bleeding. The BCCI medical team acted promptly after Iyer's vital parameters fluctuated upon returning to the dressing room. Sources said, "The team doctor and physio took no chances and immediately took Shreyas to the hospital. His condition is now stable, but it could have been fatal. He is a strong player and will recover soon."
Shreyas may remain in the hospital for a week.
The source said, "Since there has been internal bleeding, he will definitely need more time to recover, and at this point, it is difficult to set a firm timeline for Shreyas's return to competitive cricket." The 31-year-old Iyer will have to remain in the Sydney hospital for at least a week before being declared fit to return to India. Shreyas is not part of the Indian T20 team, which is scheduled to play a five-match series against Australia starting October 29.
Iyer is only playing ODIs.
The 30-year-old Iyer is currently playing only in the ODI format. He has been away from Test cricket for the past six months due to a back problem and has not been included in the T20 format recently. Recently, Iyer played a brilliant innings of 61 runs in the second ODI against Australia.
