The Supreme Court has given conditional permission to YouTuber Ranveer Allahabadia, accused of making obscene comments about his parents in the show India's Got Latent.
When Ranveer on Monday appealed to lift the ban on the show citing the livelihood of himself and 280 other employees, the court gave permission, but put a condition that he would have to give an undertaking that the standards of decency and morality will be maintained in the show.
Asked the Center to take regulatory measures
Along with this, the court, while stating the need to curb the indecency and obscenity happening in the name of freedom of expression, said that duty is also associated with the fundamental right of freedom of expression.
The apex court said that we do not want censorship but there cannot be a free for all either. The court has asked the central government to take measures to regulate it and prepare a proposal in consultation with all stakeholders. The court has expanded the scope of hearing of the case.
Solicitor General opposed
This order was given on Monday by a bench of Justice Suryakant and NK Singh during the hearing of the petitions of Ranveer Allahabadia and his companion Ashish Chanchlani.
In the last hearing on February 18, the court had given interim relief to Allahabadia from arrest but had reprimanded him for the language used in the show, calling it indecent and perverted.
Not only this, the court had banned Allahabadia and his companions from doing further shows. The court did not give any order on the application to go abroad.
During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who appeared on behalf of the Center as well as Assam and Maharashtra Government, opposed the lifting of the ban and said that the language used by Ranveer in the show was not only indecent but also perverted.
But the bench agreed with Mehta's argument to set some guidelines in this regard. The government should consider this and prepare a draft in which all stakeholders should be consulted.
Commented on Samay Raina
The court expressed its displeasure over another contestant of the show going abroad and discussing the pending case in the court and said that some youths consider themselves smart but we know how to deal with them.
The bench said that perhaps they do not know the jurisdiction of this court. The court said that he should mend his ways or else he knows how to deal with it. The court told Ranveer that he will not make any comment on the pending case in the show.
