In the Haryana assembly elections, many families successfully saved their stronghold, while some suffered a setback. The family of former Chief Minister Chaudhary Devi Lal is the biggest political family in the state. In this election, more than half a dozen members of Devi Lal's clan were in the election fray. Only two of them won. Similarly, two members of the family of former Chief Minister Bhajan Lal, who is called the Chanakya of Haryana, were in the fray this time. One of them won, while the other lost. In another family battle in the stronghold of former Chief Minister Bansi Lal, his granddaughter won, while his grandson lost. On the other hand, the descendants of the Hooda family, Surjewala family, Jindal family, and Birendra Rao family successfully won their seats.
From where was Devi Lal's family in the fray?
Eight members of the family of the country's former Deputy Prime Minister Tau Devi Lal contested the election on five different seats. These seats include Dabwali, Uchana Kalan, Ellenabad, Rania, and Fatehabad. Out of these, the family members won only in Dabwali and Rania. Family members were face to-face on both the seats.
Aditya Devi Lal won in Dabwali
The contest on the Dabwali seat of Sirsa district was also between three members of Devi Lal's family. Amit Sihag from Congress, Aditya Devi Lal from INLD, and Digvijay Chautala from JJP contested against each other. Aditya Devi Lal, grandson of former Deputy Prime Minister Chaudhary Devi Lal, won the Dabwali seat. Aditya Devi Lal was in the fray from Dabwali on an INLD ticket. He defeated Congress candidate Amit Sihag. Sihag also comes from Devi Lal's family. Digvijay Chautala contested this seat on a JJP ticket. Om Prakash Chautala's grandson Digvijay slipped to third place here. Members of the Devi Lal family faced defeat in the remaining seats. Digvijay Singh Chautala is the brother of former Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala. Aditya is the son of Devi Lal's youngest son Jagdish. In 2019, Congress's Amit Sihag won in Dabwali. Last time, Sihag of Congress defeated Aditya Devi Lal, who is now in INLD, by 15647 votes on a BJP ticket.
Grandson won in Rania, grandfather finished third.
Another seat in Sirsa district, Rania, also witnessed an electoral battle within the Devi Lal family. Arjun Chautala, son of Devi Lal's great-grandson and senior party leader Abhay Singh Chautala, won from Rania. INLD candidate Arjun defeated Congress' Sarv Mitra by 4,191 votes. At the same time, Devi Lal's son Ranjit Chautala, who contested as an independent, finished third. That is, grandfather and grandson faced each other in Rania.
Ranjit Chautala won from here as an independent candidate in 2019. He defeated Haryana Lokhit Party's Gobind Kanda by 19431 votes. Before the Lok Sabha elections, he resigned and joined the BJP and also contested the elections but lost. In this assembly election, Ranjit wanted a ticket for Rania's seat, but he did not get a ticket from the BJP. Angry with this, Ranjit resigned from the party and contested as an independent from this seat.
Abhay Chautala lost for the first time in Ellenabad.
Ellenabad was one of the special seats in the assembly elections in Haryana. Four-time MLA and Devi Lal's grandson INLD's Abhay Singh Chautala lost his election on this seat. Abhay lost to his long-time rival former MLA Bharat Singh Beniwal by 15,000 votes. Bharat Beniwal was an MLA from the Darba assembly seat on a Congress ticket in 2005. Former Chief Minister of the state Om Prakash Chautala became MLA for the first time from Ellenabad seat. Abhay Chautala has lost for the first time in Ellenabad.
Former Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant's crushing defeat
Devi Lal's fourth generation was in the fray on Uchana Kalan's seat. Dushyant Chautala, who became the kingmaker in the last election, contested from Uchana Kalan's seat but suffered a crushing defeat. Uchana Kalan seat of Jind district in Bangar belt was being counted among the hottest seats of the state. Here BJP's Devendra Chaturbhuj Atri defeated Congress candidate and former MP Brijendra Singh by just 32 votes. Dushyant Chautala remained at number five by getting only 7950 votes. In 2019, former Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala won here from JJP. He then defeated BJP candidate Prem Lata by 47452 votes.
Wife of Devi Lal's grandson lost in Fatehabad.
Sunaina Chautala was in the fray on the INLD ticket from the Fatehabad assembly seat. Sunaina, wife of Devi Lal's grandson Ravi Chautala, had also lost in the Lok Sabha elections. Ravi is the son of Devi Lal's son Pratap Singh Chautala. Sunaina stood third in Fatehabad. She got 9681 votes and could not even save her deposit.
Sister defeated brother in Bansi Lal's political legacy.
Whenever we talk about Haryana politics, three 'Lals' are mentioned. Two candidates contested the assembly elections to carry forward the political legacy of one of them, Bansi Lal family. There was a fight between the grandchildren of former Haryana CM Bansi Lal on the Tosham seat of Bhiwani district. Cousin brother-sister Anirudh and Shruti Chaudhary were face to face in Tosham. Shruti defeated brother Anirudh by 14257 votes.
Shruti, granddaughter of former Haryana CM Bansi Lal, has been an MP from Bhiwani-Mahendragarh Lok Sabha constituency. At the same time, Bansi Lal's grandson Anirudh Chaudhary's father Ranbir Mahendra has been a former BCCI president. In the 2019 assembly elections, Tosham was contested between Congress and BJP. In this election, Bansi Lal's daughter-in-law Kiran Chaudhary defeated Shashi Ranjan by a margin of 18,059 votes. Last time MLA Kiran Chaudhary left Congress and joined the BJP. Recently Kiran has been elected unopposed to the BJP Rajya Sabha from Haryana.
What happened to the Bhajanlal family?
The politics of the Bhajanlal family is considered very special in Haryana. In this election also, two members of the family contested and one of them won while the other had to face defeat. Talking about the Adampur seat, the responsibility of carrying forward the political legacy of the Bhajanlal family was on Bhavya Bishnoi. The current MLA Bhavya once again contested the elections on a BJP ticket. Congress had bet on a new face from Adampur, retired IAS Chandraprakash and it was successful. Bhavya lost this election by just 1268 votes. Bhajanlal family had been winning continuously in Adampur since 1968. For the first time in 56 years, a member of the family had to face defeat here. Congress candidate Chandraprakash got 65371 votes in Adampur while BJP's Bhavya got 64103 votes.
Bhajanlal's elder son Chandramohan also tried his luck in this election. Chandramohan Bishnoi was the Congress candidate from the Panchkula seat. In Panchkula, Chandramohan defeated BJP candidate and Speaker Gyan Chand Gupta by 1997 votes. In 1993, Chandramohan, a member of the Bhajanlal family, entered electoral politics. In 2005, Chandramohan Bishnoi also became the Deputy Chief Minister of the state.
Return of Jindal family
Hisar was one of the high-profile seats in the assembly elections in Haryana. The country's richest woman Savitri Jindal contested and won from here. She defeated Congress' Ramniwas Rada by 18941 votes. Health Minister and BJP candidate Dr. Kamal Gupta came third. Two-time MLA Dr. Kamal Gupta defeated Congress candidate Ram Niwas Rada by 15,832 votes in the 2019 elections.
The Jindal family has had an influence on the Hisar seat. From 1991 to 2024, the Jindal family contested from here six times and won five. OP Jindal himself won three times and Savitri Jindal won two. Savitri had to face defeat in the 2014 assembly elections. Savitri Jindal, who is contesting after 10 years, has returned to electoral politics with victory.
The condition of the Rao family
Ateli assembly seat of Mahendragarh district is also included in some special seats in the Haryana assembly elections. This is the same seat from where Chief Minister Rao Birendra Singh had once won. In this election too, Aarti Rao, a descendant of the Rao royal family, contested and won. Aarti defeated her opponent BSP's Attar Lal by 3085 votes.
Aarti is the daughter of Union Minister Rao Indrajit. Union Minister and six-time MP Rao Indrajit's reputation was at stake in this election. His political heir and daughter Aarti Rao is the BJP candidate from the Ateli assembly seat of Mahendragarh district. This is her first election.
In the 2019 assembly elections, the contest in Ateli was between the BJP and the Bahujan Samaj Party. BJP had fielded Sitaram as its candidate while Attar Lal contested on a BSP ticket. BJP was successful in winning this election by 18406 votes.
Hooda's family's dominance continues.
Garhi Sampla Kiloi's assembly seat was also special from the Haryana assembly elections. Former Chief Minister Bhupendra Singh Hooda was once again in the fray from this seat of Rohtak district. At the same time, Zila Parishad Chairperson Manju Hooda was the BJP candidate. Bhupendra Singh Hooda is far ahead of Manju in the results. Talking about the 2019 assembly elections, Bhupendra Singh Hooda defeated BJP's Satish Nandal by 58,312 votes.
Interestingly, Bhupendra Hooda and his father also lost in their very first election here. When elections were held for the first time on the Kiloi assembly seat formed in 1967, Chaudhary Ranbir Singh Hooda contested on a Congress ticket. Chaudhary Ranbir Singh Hooda, who was a member of the Constituent Assembly, had to face defeat in the 1967 assembly elections. In the 1982 assembly elections, Ranbir Singh's son Bhupendra Singh Hooda also had to face defeat from the Ateli seat. However, after 2000, this seat became Bhupendra Hooda's stronghold. His victory margin is increasing in every election.
Return of Surjewala family
The electoral battle of the Kaithal assembly seat was also special. Here the third generation of the Surjewala family was in the fray. Aditya, son of Congress Rajya Sabha MP Randeep Singh Surjewala, was the Congress candidate who defeated BJP's Leela Ram Gurjar. In 2019, Congress candidate Randeep Surjewala lost to BJP's Leela Ram Gurjar by just 1246 votes. 25-year-old Aditya will be the youngest MLA of the new assembly.
