The Canadian government has once again been exposed in front of India. Canada has faced embarrassment over the case related to the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The Trudeau government has admitted that it does not have any evidence related to the allegations made against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. Also, the Trudeau government said that it does not even have any information about this yet.
The statement from the Canadian government came when the Globe and Mail newspaper accused India of killing Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar was a Khalistani supporter and accused of involvement in terrorist activities in India. He was murdered in British Columbia, Canada in June 2023. On the matter, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Indian agencies of being involved in the murder of Nijjar. This statement had increased tension in India-Canada relations.
India's stand on Hardeep Singh Nijjar murder
India had completely rejected the allegations of Nijjar's murder leveled by Canada. India had said that Canada has failed to curb Khalistani activities in its country.
At the same time, the Globe and Mail report claimed that Canada has evidence linking Indian officials to criminal activities. The newspaper accused many big people including the Indian PM without proof. Now after this report, the Canadian government has clarified that they do not have any evidence that directly blames Indian officials in this case.
Effect on India-Canada relations
After Trudeau's statement against India, tension has increased between the two countries. As a result, India suspended trade talks with Canada and cut down diplomatic activities. This also affected the ongoing trade agreements between the two countries.
