Pakistan Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) founder commander Umar Khalid Khurasani alias Abdul Wali Mohammad was killed in a blast on Sunday. He was present in the Paktika province of Afghanistan. Khurasani was traveling in the car at the time of the blast.
Two more TTP commanders Mufti Hasan and Hafiz Daulat Khan were also in the car along with Khurasani. All were killed in the blast. It is not yet known how the car exploded. The US had placed a bounty of $3 million on Khurasani.
The news of the death had come earlier also, remained active in Kashmir too
Khurasani, who started Jihad at a very young age, was also active in Kashmir. There were reports of his death many times before, but they turned out to be wrong. This time Tehreek-e-Taliban has confirmed Khurasani's death. The organization's spokesman, Mohammad Khurasani, issued a statement, saying that the TTP would soon provide more details about the death.
The Taliban government in Afghanistan has not yet stated the incident. Who attacked Umar Khalid Khurasani, it is not clear yet.
TTP hand behind many bomb blasts in Pakistan
TTP is banned by Pakistan. Pakistan's army has done many major operations against it. This organization has done many big blasts in Pakistan in the last few years. There were several rounds of talks between the TTP and the government to stop the violence in Pakistan, but no result could be achieved. Efforts are also being made to bring the talks back on track.
Khurasani involved in talks with Pak government, but not its supporter
Khurasani was not a supporter of talks with the Pakistan government. However, he was leading the negotiating team on behalf of the organization. Umar Khalid Khorasan parted ways with TTP in 2014. After this, he formed the Jamaat-ul-Ahrar organization. This organization has also carried out many major attacks in Pakistan.
Jamaat-ul-Ahrar had claimed responsibility for the attack on the Wagah border in 2014. Jamaat-ul-Ahrar claimed responsibility for several attacks, including two blasts in Lahore in 2015, the Easter attack in Lahore itself in 2016, and the 2017 attack on protesters on Lahore's Mall Road. In 2020, Khurasani again joined TTP.
Who was Khalid Khurasani?
Umar Khalid Khurasani was a resident of Mehmand district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. He was also in charge of the Mehmand branch of TTP. According to senior Pakistani journalist Arshad Yousafzai, Khurasani had good penetration in the organization.
Yousafzai says that Khurasani started jihad at an early age. He was also involved in the fight against the Indian Army in Kashmir. In November 2014, his organization Jamaat-ul-Ahrar came into the limelight after attacking the ceremony at the Wagah border. In 2020, he again came with TTP at the behest of TTP Commander Noor Wali Mehsud. At present, he was a member of the organization's Rahbari Shura (Leadership Council). There were many attacks on Umar Khalid in the past as well. He had survived the attacks in December last year and February this year.
Several TTP leaders were killed in attacks
According to Arshad Yousafzai, this is not the first attack on a TTP leader inside Afghanistan. There have been 6-7 major attacks on Khalid Khurasani since last December, but every time he survived. Former TTP spokesman Mohammad Khurasani was killed in Afghanistan itself. Maulvi Fakir Mohammad, who was the organization's number two in Kunar province, was also attacked. He too had survived.
TTP leaders more secure in Afghanistan than in Pakistan
The TTP has had good relations with the Taliban in Afghanistan and both organizations have supported each other in battles. Yousafzai says that whenever the Taliban is questioned about this, they answer that Afghanistan has become much safer than before under its rule. In its defense, the Taliban has been saying that such attacks have been happening in different parts of Europe and the world and they are very difficult to stop.
Questions will be raised about the Taliban government
After the death of Umar Khalid Khurasani, questions will once again arise about the Taliban in Afghanistan. The leaders of the TTP feel safe in Afghanistan, as they have good relations with the Taliban. Yousafzai says that the Taliban, who claim the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, say they have secured the country. They are not that safe. Now anyone can target anyone.
The people behind all the attacks on TTP so far are not visible. Sometimes Pakistan is questioned and sometimes the finger is pointed at ISPK, the branch of the Islamic State in Afghanistan. Now the situation is such that people are also raising questions about the Islamic Emirate (Taliban government) and suspect that maybe it has a hand in the attack. Till now the TTP attackers have never been detected.
Attacks in Afghanistan were a failure of the Taliban government
There is a Taliban government in Afghanistan and they claim that they control the whole country. Yet such attacks are happening. The Taliban government does not have the capability, nor does it have such intelligence, to know about such attacks in advance. Or they could reach out to those responsible behind them.
Yousafzai says the Taliban in Afghanistan have not been very successful in investigating attacks on civilians or their commanders. These attacks on the TTP in the area controlled by the Taliban raise questions about the Taliban. The Taliban may not even know about them. It is also their failure that they are not able to keep the areas under their control safe.
The Pakistan Army started Operation Zarb-e-Azb against TTP in the year 2014. After this major operation of the Pakistani army, the TTP leaders and their families went to Afghanistan in search of safe places and were living there. However, during the government of Ashraf Ghani in Afghanistan, the Afghan army and NATO also carried out attacks on the TTP within Afghanistan. Yet they felt more secure in Afghanistan than in Pakistan.
threat to peace talks with Pakistan
Yousafzai says that this sense of security had increased for him from October 2021 onwards, as the TTP started talks with Pakistan. To a large extent, there was agreement on many things. It was believed that TTP would be able to return to its areas in Pakistan again through this.
This attack can also have an impact on the ongoing peace talks between TTP and Pakistan. According to Yousafzai, the person on whom the attack took place was leading the TTP's negotiating team. After his death, TTP will suspect that the attack was carried out by Pakistan. He may withdraw from peace talks.
Stop talks with Pakistan.
There is also a danger that among all the TTP leaders, Khalid Khurasani had opposed talks with Pakistan on several occasions. It was also understood that he did not want peace talks with Pakistan because he realized that the government of Pakistan may forgive him, but he has carried out such huge attacks that the common people of Pakistan will never forgive him. Will find
organization can break again
Umar Khalid Khurasani separated from TTP and formed his organization. It later reconnected to TTP. Now in the absence of Khorasani, there is a danger of breaking the TTP again. This may increase violence in TTP-affected areas in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
According to Arshad Yousafzai, Khalid Khurasani's organization Jamaat-ul-Ahrar is currently part of TTP. There is a high chance that he will part ways with her.
Islamic State Khorasan may be stronger
Yousafzai says that if the organization leaves the TTP, then there will be a risk of attacks again. However, it will not be easy for him to do so, as he will have to fight the Pakistani army on the one hand and the TTP inside Afghanistan on the other. The Afghan Taliban will also be against him. In such a situation, he may go with the Islamic State Khorasan. If this happens then Islamic State Khorasan will be strong and will become a headache for Taliban-TTP.
According to Rohan Ahmed, a journalist of Urdu News in Pakistan who monitors the activities of TTP, Khurasani had close relations with the leaders of the Afghan Taliban. When Islamic State's influence increased in the Kunar and Nangarhar provinces of Afghanistan, the Afghan Taliban gave the responsibility of fighting and eliminating the Islamic State to Jamaat-ul-Ahrar of Khurasani.
