Uniform Civil Code: Tribes of Uttarakhand may be out of UCC, the government is yet to decide on this

The tribes of Uttarakhand can remain separate from the Uniform Civil Code. There are seven major tribes in the state, whose customs and rules are different. However, the government has yet to decide on this. Although the aim is to implement the Uniform Civil Code on every citizen of the state, the Scheduled Tribes can be kept out of it.

 

Right now the government has to decide on this. Tharu tribe is the largest tribal community of Uttarakhand and Kumaon in the state. Tharu tribe resides in Khatima, Nanakmatta, Sitarganj, Kichha, etc. areas of Udham Singh Nagar.

 

Tribes have their customs and traditions

After this, Jaunsari is the second largest tribe of the state, who mainly reside in Bhabar region and Chakrata, Kalsi, Tuni, Lakhamandal area of Dehradun, Jaunpur of Tehri and Parg Nekan area of Uttarkashi. At the same time, the Bhotiya tribe is considered to be the oldest in the state.

 

There are many sub-castes of the Bhotiya tribe like Marachha, Tolchha, Johari, Shoka, Darmiyan, Chaundasi, Vyasi, Jad, Jethra, Chhapra (Bakhriya). The Bhotiya tribe resides in the foothill areas of Maha Himalaya. This caste resides in Pithoragarh, Chamoli, Uttarkashi. On the other hand, people of the Boxa tribe live in 173 villages of Bazpur, Gadarpur, and Kashipur of Udham Singh Nagar, Ramnagar of Nainital, Dugadda of Pauri and Vikas Nagar, Doiwala and Sahaspur development blocks of Dehradun in the Terai-Bhabar region of the state.

 

The Boxa-dominated area of Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar is called Buxa, while the Raji tribe is the only one in the state that still lives in the forests. Mainly lives in Pithoragarh district. Tharu, Boxa, Jaunsari, Bhotia, and Raji tribes have been placed under the Scheduled Castes of 1967. These tribes have their distinct customs. There are different rules.
