The mystery of the stepwell found in an empty plot in the Muslim-dominated locality Laxman Ganj in Chandausi of Sambhal is now being revealed layer by layer. Excavation and cleaning of the stepwell is still going on on the sixth day, Thursday.
During the excavation on Wednesday, the upper floor is now clearly visible. The red stone floor is visible. However, the work of removing soil from the first floor is still going on. On Wednesday, the ASI team reached the spot and also surveyed the stepwell.
On December 17, a 150-year-old ruined Bankebihari temple was found in the locality of Laxman Ganj. On Saturday, the workers of the Sanatan Sevak Sangh had given an application to DM Rajendra Pansia in the Sampoorna Samadhan Diwas, claiming to get the temple renovated and that there is a stepwell in an empty plot located in the street near the temple.
When the excavation was started on the same day on the orders of the DM, the stepwell started coming into existence. When the walls of the stepwell were seen on the first day, the excavation gained momentum. On the second day, the gates of the rooms and the tunnel-like corridor behind the gates were also visible during the digging. On the third day, stairs to go down inside the stepwell were visible.
On the fourth day, 13 stairs were visible. The digging work is going on daily from 10 am to 6 pm. On the fifth day, Wednesday, the floor of the upper floor became visible. The floor is of red stone. There are six carved gates on both sides adjacent to the stairs. Five gates are plain.
There is a room-like corridor behind it. The ASI team, which arrived in the afternoon, got the soil removed from the floor and investigated. The height of the lintel from the floor is said to be about ten and a half feet.
It is said that there is another floor below the upper floor and there is a well below it. Around which stairs are built. On Wednesday, the work of removing soil was stopped at four in the evening. On the sixth day, in the morning, the municipal team started removing soil from the upper floor.
ASI Meerut team surveyed the stepwell
The team reached the spot on Wednesday morning at around 10:45 am to survey the stepwell and surveyed the upper floor of the stepwell. They also got the workers to remove the soil from the floor. There was red stone on the floor. Not only this, they measured the area from the floor to the lintel. During this time, the team kept avoiding talking to the media persons. They refused to say anything.
The team included Rajesh Kumar and Mukesh Kumar. The team told the municipal officials only that they had come from Meerut ASI to survey the stepwell. After surveying for about two hours, the team returned at around 2 pm. EO Krishna Kumar Sonkar said that two people had come. They said that they had come from ASI Meerut to survey the stepwell.
