Accusing some parties and organizations of misleading Muslims, Union Minority Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the government intends to pass the Waqf Amendment Bill in this session of Parliament. Rijiju said that all the allies, many Muslim organizations including the Bishop of Kerala are with the government on the bill. In such a situation, if necessary, the government will also extend the session to get the bill passed. He indicated that the bill could be introduced in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
Rijiju said in the press conference that preparations have been completed to bring the bill. Its purpose is to bring transparency in the functioning of the Waqf and make it accountable. Its benefits are to be ensured for poor Muslims, women, and children. Expressing objection to calling the bill unconstitutional, he said that the country is run by the Constitution.
Only those who have occupied Waqf property are worried.
Rijiju said, 'The government knows who is worried about the bill. Those who have occupied Waqf property worth crores for decades are worried. These include Muslim organizations doing politics and people like AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi. They know that after the bill is passed, their true colors will be exposed. This is the reason why these people first provoked innocent Muslims on CAA and now are misleading them in opposition to this bill.'
'MPs should support while keeping an unbiased view on the proposed amendment'
Meanwhile, Christian and Sufi organizations have supported the proposed amendment to the existing Waqf Act. Calling some provisions of the existing Act unfair and unconstitutional, these organizations have urged political parties and MPs to take an unbiased view of the amendment bill and support it.
The Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) stated on Monday saying, 'The reality is that some provisions of the existing Central Waqf Act are against the Constitution and the secular democratic values of the country.' Urging the MPs to support the Modi government's proposed amendment, the CBCI said, "In Kerala, the Waqf Board has implemented these provisions to declare ancestral residential properties of over 600 families in Munambam area as Waqf land. Only a legal amendment can provide a permanent solution, and this must be recognized by the people's representatives."
