
During the Bihar Assembly elections, a fierce political battle erupted between the ruling party and the opposition over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). The political temperature rose so high that the matter reached the Supreme Court. However, as soon as the election results were announced, the SIR issue in Bihar vanished overnight. Now, this wave of SIR has reached neighboring Bengal.
Following the successful implementation of SIR in Bihar, the Election Commission has vigorously initiated this process in 11 states across the country. West Bengal is also included in this list. With assembly elections scheduled in Bengal next year, SIR has once again become a political issue.
What did Rahul Gandhi say about SIR?
After Bihar, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is now preparing to corner the government against SIR in West Bengal. Sharing a post on the social media platform, Rahul Gandhi wrote, "SIR has created chaos across the country, and what is the result? 16 BLOs have died in three weeks due to heart attacks, suicide, and stress. Despite this, SIR is not bringing any improvement. It is simply an atrocity."
According to Rahul Gandhi,
SIR is a deliberate ploy. Through it, ordinary people are being harassed. Unnecessary pressure is being exerted on BLOs. This is not a failure, but a conspiracy. Democracy is being sacrificed to protect those in power.

It should be noted that the opposition tried its best to stop the SIR process in Bihar. From going to the Supreme Court to protesting, all the opposition's efforts were unsuccessful. Responding to the opposition's protest, the Election Commission stated that the voter list is being updated periodically. This is not the first time this has happened.
Why is SIR being implemented?
The Election Commission has ordered SIR in 11 states, including West Bengal and the Northeastern states. Many of these states share borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, leading to a large number of illegal refugees sneaking into India. Furthermore, these infiltrators become voters using fake documents. The Election Commission has initiated SIR to identify them.
TMC calls a meeting
Mamata Banerjee's party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has also launched a campaign against SIR in West Bengal. TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee has called a meeting to discuss SIR. During this meeting, Mamata Banerjee will speak to members of the Matua community and provide them with information related to SIR, ensuring that no one is excluded from the valid voter list.
