Due to torrential rains in the mountains, Yamuna is flowing above the danger mark and water has filled houses, markets, fields and cremation grounds. Life in the areas near the Yamuna and the lower areas has been affected.
At the same time, Vasudev Ghat, built on the banks of the Yamuna, has been closed due to water reaching there. Yamuna Aarti held here has also been stopped for the time being. Due to the rising water level of Yamuna, people are being evacuated from their homes and sent to safer places in Delhi as well as areas adjoining Yamuna in Gautam Buddha Nagar and Faridabad.
Five thousand families of NCR have been affected due to water entering the Yamuna flood areas and lower areas. Temporary camps built by the government on the roadsides and in schools have become the shelters of the affected people.
The rain on Tuesday remained a problem for these people. Police and civil defense volunteers have been deployed near the banks of the Yamuna and in temporary camps.
Yamuna water entered the houses of Yamuna Bazaar near Kashmiri Gate in Delhi. The irrigation department has built a wall by filling sacks with soil so that the water of the Yamuna does not enter the residential area through the ring road. But water is making its way from somewhere or the other.
The rear portion of the Nigam Bodh Ghat has been submerged in water. Due to this, funerals could not be held in the rear portion on Tuesday. The main gate and premises of the ghat are filled with rainwater. Due to the rise in the water level of the Yamuna, the water of the drain here is not going into the Yamuna. Due to which water is filled in the premises and the main gate.
This caused a lot of trouble to the people. Yamuna water has entered the Monastery Market. The traders vacated the shops. Keeping in mind the danger of electric current spreading, the electricity here has been cut off. The administration has closed the market.
In Yamuna Khadar, slums in Mayur Vihar, Purana Lohapul, and Geeta Colony have been submerged in water. The people living here are living in temporary camps with their cattle.
Whereas in Faridabad, the Yamuna administration has declared 27 villages sensitive from the point of view of flood. Here, Yamuna is flowing at 199.95 meters. The danger mark here is 202.30 meters. Water reached Mohana, Chhayansa, Chandpur, Shahjahanpur, Manjhawali, Rajpur Kalan, Amipur, Sidola, and Lalpur villages on the banks of the Yamuna, and crops were submerged. Water comes to Faridabad via the Okhla Barrage.
The Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Department started gradually increasing the water level of the Okhla Barrage from Tuesday morning. In the morning, 60 thousand 189 cusecs was being released from the Okhla Barrage. In the evening, it reached 91 thousand 247 cusecs. District Deputy Commissioner Vikram Singh visited the villages situated on the riverbank along with administrative officials. The affected people are being taken to camps.
Apart from this, the effect of increasing water levels in the Yamuna is also being seen in Gautam Buddha Nagar. The district administration has safely evacuated about 450 families and more than 1500 animals from more than 500 farm houses built in the Yamuna flood area.
A shelter has been set up in the community centers and schools of the authority in Sector-135 and Sector-150 for the flood affected people. On Tuesday, DM Medha Rupam and ADM Finance Atul Kumar also assessed the situation arising due to the water level in the Yamuna river, and all flood posts and the disaster management department have been activated. The damage to crops is also being assessed.
Animals and citizens were rescued from the flood area
Relief and rescue operations have also been carried out by the district administration when some people were stranded due to the Yamuna water reaching the flood area in Delhi. On the one hand, the district administration is constantly appealing to the people living on the banks of the Yamuna to go to safe places by making announcements.
At the same time, people who are reported to be trapped in the water are also being rescued. In Burari, about 20 people were rescued by boat by the Boat Club team of East Delhi District Administration. These people were trapped in the water in the flood area. In the same light, near New Ashok Nagar, about five dogs were safely rescued and left in an empty place in the flood area.
Drains should not back up in Lutyens Delhi, and water will be put in the sump
Due to the flood in the year 2023, floodwater had reached various areas of Delhi. Due to the backing of drains, waterlogging situation had also arisen near Bhagwan Das Road and Supreme Court in Lutyens Delhi.
Looking at the old experiences, the corporation had already made preparations for this. The situation is normal now; if there is a situation of backing up the drain, then the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will use a sump well. Then this water will be sent to Yamuna through pump.
NDMC Vice President Kuljeet Chahal said that we had already made preparations for this. A sump well of five lakh litres capacity has been built near Purana Qila on Mathura Road. If a situation of backflow of the drain arises, NDMC will first collect the water in this sump. After this, it will be sent to Yamuna through two pumps of 50-50 HP.
Chahal said that the sewer of the NDMC area does not go to the Yamuna. Only rainwater goes to the Yamuna. There is a possibility of backflow in drains 12 and 14 near the Yamuna. If such a situation arises, we will stop our water from going into the drain and collect water in the sump and send it to the Yamuna through a pump.
Chahal said that we are constantly monitoring. For this, a public notice will be issued to the citizens, and they will be alerted.
