India has unequivocally told the Bangladeshi government that it is the responsibility of the Yunus government to address the anti-India sentiment that has arisen in the country following the murder of student leader Usman Hadi. India has expressed its expectation that the Bangladeshi government will conduct a swift and impartial investigation into the murder of student leader Hadi.
This was conveyed by senior officials of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs to Bangladesh's High Commissioner Riaz Hamidullah in New Delhi. India expressed concern over the attacks on minorities in Bangladesh and, in particular, over the spread of anti-India rumors there. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs summoned Hamidullah on Tuesday evening.
'The Bangladeshi High Commissioner was only invited.'
Earlier on Tuesday morning, the Bangladeshi Ministry of Foreign Affairs had summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma and raised with him the protests and alleged acts of vandalism outside the Bangladeshi High Commission and visa centers in India. According to sources in the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, the Bangladeshi High Commissioner was only invited, not summoned. An invitation is a general request, while a summons is a formal and official call, often implying an obligation to appear for a specific reason.
According to sources, in the context of the murder of student leader Hadi, it was emphasized to the Bangladeshi High Commissioner that the way any incident there is being linked to India without investigation is a matter of serious concern for bilateral relations. Whether it is the murder of Hadi or the murder of Hindu youth Dipu Chandra Das, there should be an impartial investigation, and the culprits should be punished. It is worth noting that protests against India were held across Bangladesh after the death of student leader Hadi.
Radicals fueling anti-India sentiment
On one hand, the Dhaka police and the interim government's Home Minister stated that they did not know the whereabouts of Hadi's killers. On the other hand, student leaders were publicly blaming India for Hadi's murder. The interim government of Mohammad Yunus, which is widely considered to have completely failed in managing the country's internal security situation, is reportedly fanning anti-India sentiment to appease radical student leaders.
Following the murder of Usman Hadi, the already-strained relations between India and Bangladesh have further deteriorated. Continuous rumors are being spread against India, and student leaders are attempting to capitalize on this to further their political ambitions. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs expressed its concern to the Bangladeshi High Commissioner regarding the creation of an anti-India atmosphere without any investigation and the Bangladeshi government's inaction on the matter.
It is worth noting that the interim government has planned to hold general elections on February 12, 2026. The deteriorating situation in Bangladesh and the anti-India protests are being linked to this upcoming election. In light of the situation, India has significantly curtailed the services of its High Commission. In response, Bangladesh has temporarily suspended visa services in Delhi and Agartala.
