Elections for the post of President are to be held in Sri Lanka on July 20. Earlier, the leader of the opposition party Samagi Jan Balvegaya (SJB) Sajith Premadasa announced that he would withdraw from his presidential candidature. Along with this, he has decided to support Dullas Alhapparuma.
Premadasa wrote on social media – For the good of my country whom I love and the people I love, I withdraw my candidacy for the presidency. Samagi Jan Balvegaya and our alliance will work hard to make Dullas Alhapparuma win the election.
Today's nomination for the post of President
The nomination process for the presidential candidacy in Sri Lanka started at 10 am today. With Premadasa's candidature withdrawn, it will now be contested between caretaker President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Dulas Alhapparuma, and Janata Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) leader Anura Kumara.
Gotabaya fled Rajapaksa's country and fled to Singapore due to a public uprising amid economic and political upheaval. After which, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was appointed as the acting President. However, now tomorrow there will be an election for a full-time President.
The presidential election will be done through a secret vote
After 44 years in Sri Lanka, the President will be elected through secret voting. Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abhaywardene said that the presidential election will be held on July 20 in the 225-member parliament. Let us tell you that for the first time after 1978, the President will not be elected through the mandate, but through the secret vote of the MPs. Because of the circumstances going through the economic crisis and to stop the mass revolt, this decision has been taken.
